Yes! I took a Croque Monsieur sandwich and turned it into a pizza. I also made it vegan! Full disclaimer: I have never eaten a REAL Croque Monsieur sandwich. I saw this sandwich while I was watching television and I have been dreaming of it ever since. My craving finally was strong enough to begin thinking of how to veganize the recipe. During this process, I decided that this would be great as a pizza and thus this recipe was born.
For this recipe, I used a full recipe of my basic pizza dough but you can feel free to use store-bought. For the cheese, I used vegan smoked gouda slices from Whole Foods but you can use any vegan cheese that you prefer. I used applewood-smoked vegan ham from Sweet Earth which is out of this world! I highly recommend giving it a try. All of this goodness is topped with the most amazing vegan bechamel sauce I have ever made.
This pizza has quickly moved up to one of my favorites on this blog. I encourage you to give it a try!
Croque Monsieur Pizza
Equipment
- large cast iron skillet
Ingredients
- Basic Pizza Dough recipe or 1 package store-bought dough dough recipe linked above
- 2 Tbsp plant-based butter divided
- 5 slices of plant-based cheese
- 8 slices of vegan ham
- fresh thyme leaves to finish
Bechamel Sauce Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp plant-based butter
- 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsweetened original plant-based milk
- ¼ tsp turmeric
- ⅛ tsp nutmeg
- 2 Tbsp nutritional yeast
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 500°F and place cast iron pan inside oven while preheating
- While oven is preheating make the bechamel sauce by heating a small sauce pan over medium heat
- Add 2 Tbsp of plant-based butter to the pan and melt
- When butter is melted, take a whisk and add the flour while whisking until combined and let mixture cook for 1 minute while stirring occasionally
- Add ⅓ cup of the plant-based milk and whisk vigorously until everything is smooth; repeat until all of the milk is added to the mixture
- Turn down the heat to low and let bechamel simmer, until it is thick
- Season with salt and the remaining spices
- Once the oven is preheated carefully remove the skillet and drop 1 Tbsp of plant-based butter into the pan. Brush butter as it melts to coat the pan
- Roll the pizza dough out into a circle about the size of your skillet and drop into the pan spreading the dough to touch all sides
- Melt the remaining 1 Tbsp of plant-based butter and brush it over the top of the dough
- Top dough with plant-based cheese slices and vegan ham slices
- Pour your desired amount of bechamel sauce over the pizza
- Bake pizza for 12 – 15 minutes until crust is golden
- Sprinkle fresh thyme leaves over pizza and serve
